Manuka Honey is a premium variety of honey, originating from the nectar of the Manuka Plant (Leptospermum scoparium), indigenous to the pristine bushlands of New Zealand. This honey stands out due to its unique medicinal properties and has gained worldwide acclaim through multiple research-based studies.
The Manuka tree typically stands about 2m – 5m tall and blooms for just a few weeks each year, making Manuka Honey a rare and valuable resource. The nectar from these blooms contains dihydroxyacetone, which bees convert into Methylglyoxal (MGO), the compound chiefly responsible for the honey’s strong antibacterial properties. The higher the concentration of MGO, the more potent the honey.
Unlike other honey types, Manuka Honey has a naturally thick and creamy consistency. This gives it a jelly-like appearance, differentiating it further in texture and quality. In cooler conditions (such as in a fridge), it may crystallise, which is a natural and reversible process. When Manuka Honey crystallises, it won’t affect the taste or longevity of its potency; it simply causes that raw honey to take on a different consistency.
At Genuine Manuka Honey, we ensure our honey is carefully harvested and packaged, ensuring that it retains its natural properties. This includes a range of health-promoting compounds such as hydrogen peroxide, which imparts its antibacterial nature, and various other bioactive compounds like flavonoids and phenolic acids that contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

MGO (Methylglyoxal) is a compound naturally found in Manuka honey. It’s a key factor in the honey’s unique antibacterial properties and is used to measure its potency and quality. The higher the MGO levels, the more potent properties the honey will have.
The MGO rating is determined through laboratory testing. The rating shows how many milligrams of MGO are in each kilogram of honey e.g. 300+MGO mean at least 300mg of MGO per kilogram of manuka honey. At Genuine, our honeys come in MGO 300+, 500+, 550+ and 800+ to suit our customers preferences and budgets.
Mono means ‘one’ and Flora means ‘flowers,’ so monofloral honey means honey from one flower. Of course, out in the bush our bees are able to collect their honey from other flowers so our beekeepers carefully place their hives in locations of bush where Manuka Trees provide the main source of flowers available to the bees. This means our monofloral honey is primarily just from the nectar of Manuka flowers ensuring it is of exceptional quality and potency. All Genuine Manuka Honey is ‘monofloral’.
Mutifloral honey is where bees have sourced their pollen from many different flowers or the beekeeper or processing company is blending other honey with Manuka honey. This helps to make their product go further and allows them to lower the cost of their honey. This may also alter the colour or taste of the honey. However this also dilutes the potent health benefits of Manuka honey.
100% of all Genuine Manuka Honey comes straight from the hive to you without any dilution, or the addition of other types of honey or other other additives.
There is considerable research that has shown that Manuka Honey contains powerful natural antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties which sets it apart from other honeys. It contains methylglyoxal as an active ingredient, likely responsible for these antibacterial effects. Additionally, Manuka honey has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant benefits. The higher the MGO rating the more potent its properties.
- Antibacterial Properties: The high MGO content in Manuka Honey gives it a powerful antibacterial quality, effective against a wide range of pathogens, including those resistant to antibiotics.
- Wound Healing: Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it an excellent option for topical application on minor wounds and burns, promoting faster healing and reducing infection risks.
- Digestive Health: Manuka Honey is known to help soothe the digestive system.
- Sore Throat Relief: Its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties may provide relief for sore throats and may help reduce cough frequency.
- Oral Health: Regular consumption of Manuka Honey may reduce harmful oral bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay.
- Immune Boosting: The rich nutritional profile of Manuka Honey, laden with antioxidants, helps in boosting the immune system.
- Skin Care: Applied topically, it can hydrate, soothe, and nourish the skin, making it a natural remedy to assist with acne and other skin conditions.

Because of Manuka honey’s powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, it is excellent as a topical treatment to assist with damaged skin and treatments for minor burns.
Manuka honey can balance your skin’s pH level. Its anti-inflammatory effect can decrease local inflammation caused by acne. As an antibacterial, Manuka honey leaves fewer bacteria to infect pores and cause acne. This honey may heal existing pimples, as well. The low pH speeds up the healing of acne.
To use, put a pea-sized amount of honey on your face. You can use a bit more or dilute it with a few water drops, if needed. Research has found that diluted Manuka honey still maintains its antibacterial properties. Massage the honey all over your face gently for a couple of minutes. Then, rinse your skin and pat dry.
Yes, Manuka Honey in moderation may be consumed or you can use it externally when you’re pregnant. Better still, Manuka Honey has therapeutic properties that may help suppress your skin’s elasticity. It may also help reduce inflammation, keep your skin hydrated, and reduce the likelihood of developing stretch marks. Infant botulism is not a risk, because the bacteria from botulism spores (sometimes found in honey) cannot be passed from mother to child through the placenta.
Paediatricians do not recommend giving any honey to infants under 12 months. Their reasoning is that honey can contain spores of bacteria that are known to lead to botulism. This does not mean, however, that the honey is contaminated – these bacteria spores occur naturally and usually do not affect children over the age of one and adults who have a normal immune system. Since babies digestive and immune systems are still developing, this bacteria can be potentially very harmful to infants under 12 months of age.
For general health boost and wellbeing – one level teaspoon a day
For assist with sickness and infections – two to three level teaspoons a day for an adult (or sachets if you have them). One or two level teaspoons a day for children while sick. While Manuka Honey has a lower glycemic index than raw sugar, it still is a form of sugar so take in moderation. As always, if there’s no improvement, please consult your health professional.
Note : No honey is recommended for infants under 12 months of age as their body may not be able to process it properly.
Sugar crystals are hydroscopic (naturally absorb moisture)which can lead to the growth of undesirable yeasts. Glass containers with sealable lids work best for storing honey as they keep the right liquid to sugar ratio, where as plastic containers are permeable to water vapour, gas, and odours,
Refrigerating honey is fine but be aware that because is raw honey, Manuka Honey will crystallise more rapidly in such cool temperatures.
Manuka Honey is sold in a wide range of MGO strengths, indicating its potency – the higher MGO level has more potent antibacterial properties. That’s why at Genuine Manuka Honey, all our honey is mono-floral and ranges from 300+ MGO to 800+ MGO. We package in 40g, 125, 250g and 500g containers or in our easily transportable 10g sachets for your convenience. This allows our discerning customers to purchase the strength and amount they need to fit their budget.
Manuka Trees are unique to only New Zealand and Australia. Harvesting manuka honey requires very careful placement of hives and its nectar is only available during the short flowering season of the Manuka flower. This limits the global supply of Manuka honey each year. Also, the powerful health benefits of manuka honey have become well known by consumers around the world, so it is continually in demand by people who are health conscious or who are seeking highly effective natural remedies.
Like most things in life, you will get what you pay for, so pay attention to the MGO levels, check that it’s pure (Mono-floral) Manuka honey, and that it carries a reputable certification.
If properly stored, quality honey has an exceptionally long shelf life. It may crystallize over time, but this is a natural process and does not indicate spoilage. Gently warm and stir your honey to mix the sugar crystals back into the honey. Although Manuka Honey doesn’t have an expiration date, like many honey producers, Genuine Manuka Honey Ltd suggests a “best by” date of three years to ensure you consume your honey at its best state of potency.
Did you know that during the famous 1922 archaeological excavation of King Tutankhamun’s tomb, archaeologists found a jar of honey. The archaeologists tasted it and to their amazement, found it to be still edible and sweet.

Understanding the quality of Manuka Honey is crucial, and this is where the ratings UMF and MGO come into play. UMF, or Unique Manuka Factor, is a quality trademark that assures purity and quality. It measures the non-peroxide activity (NPA), which is unique to Manuka Honey, indicating its antibacterial strength.
MGO, on the other hand, directly measures the Methylglyoxal content in the honey. MGO levels can range significantly in Manuka Honey, and the higher the MGO, the stronger its antibacterial efficacy. Both these ratings are essential for consumers to understand what they are purchasing, ensuring they get the genuine product with the expected health benefits.
