MGO explained

Unlocking the Mystery of MGO Ratings in Manuka Honey:

We’re not just passionate about honey – we’re dedicated to promoting personal well-being.

What Is MGO in Manuka Honey?

MGO stands for Methylglyoxal and is a natural compound found in varying concentrations in Manuka Honey. This bioactive compound fights infections caused by viruses and bacteria and is one of the key components responsible for Manuka honey’s potent antibacterial and health-enhancing properties.

Bees produce MGO when they break down the Manuka nectar using enzymes in their stomachs. They convert a compound found in the nectar, known as dihydroxyacetone (DHA), into MGO. One intriguing fact is that this transformative process of producing MGO continues between 12 – 24 months even after the nectar is harvested and the MGO concentration increases as DHA levels diminish in the honey..

Now, let’s decode those numbers you see on the labels of Manuka honey jars. MGO ratings reveal how many milligrams of MGO per kilogram of Manuka Honey. So 100+MGO means there is 100mg of MGO per kilogram. Typically MGO ranges from 30 to over 1000 although the very highest levels are difficult to produce and extremely expensive.

UMF and MGO Ratings

All pure monofloral Manuka Honeys come in varying degrees of strength. Different brands use different grading systems to highlight the strength or bioactivity. UMF and MGO are the most commonly used grading systems and the most trusted.
